After watching X in 2022 (5 skull) and Pearl in 2023 (4.5 skulls), I was pretty excited to watch the third movie in this series. I held off from when it was released so I could include it here, and was not disappointed! It’s as good as the first two, though pretty different feeling as both of those.
X and Pearl were horror movies, through and through. Maxxxine feels more akin to 80s action movies like Dirty Harry or Cobra, or probably closest to, Taxi Driver, than Friday the 13th. If you had to describe this movie with one word, I think the word would have to be “dirty”.
The performances are great, Mia Goth is amazing as always, and her supporting cast is made up of Kevin Bacon, Margret Monaghan and fucking Giancarlo Esposito.
The only note I have is that the ending drops all pretense of being anything other than an action movie and goes full hog. It’s done well, and it’s not bad, it was jut a pretty jarring shift that felt sloppy.
That aside, great movie!
