The Monkey is weird. it’s a horror-comedy that doesn’t really know what it wants to do. It will build up a very tense “Final Destination” style scene and then hit you with an exploding person like a pie to the face. It’s a well done movie, but feels like the script was a Mad Lib being completed by 13 year olds.
That being said, it wasn’t entirely unenjoyable. There are a lot of cool scenes where the Monkey is seen more abstractly or where it is almost a force of nature rather than a cursed toy. These parts I thought were a really cool way to make The Monkey seem like the huge evil looming over everyone that it was being made out as. I also like the plot between the brothers, when you eventually find out that emotional trauma is basically fueling the death plague (and then they kinda ruin it with a bowling ball), but the father son story line is just “meh”.
This is a good party movie because the kills, though somewhat random and disconnected from the story, are pretty cool. It’s a shame they didn’t lean a little more one way or the other.
