What a great movie to start off HMAD 2026! I went to the theater for this one to make it a little more of an event and I’m glad I did. There was a fun energy in the room.
Zach Cregger has an amazing ability to make you feel like you’re experiencing the events of the movie rather than observing them, and this is no exception. Centered on a medical courier who stumbles into the nightmare happenings of Racoon City, Resident Evil shows you a very narrow view of what is a much bigger story.
There are a lot of jump scares which aren’t my favorite thing, but combined with a very narrow point of view from the main character, they feel more organic. Since there is not a lot of downtime between the ridiculously horrific things that happen but even when things are quiet there’s a lingering tension. You also don’t really know what to expect, so you never really get a rest, just like the ill-fated courier.
