Another zombie movie, but now with more fun!
Unlike the last movie, Queens of the Dead (Co-Written and Directed by Tina Romero…yeah, that one) brings us a movie about zombies killing people and people acting like idiots. It doesn’t take itself very seriously at all (which isn’t to say that the serious nature of the relationships between characters, as well as all the metaphors wrapped around a modern society collapsing under the vapid mindlessness of American “culture” aren’t skillfully on display here). Most of the movie takes place inside a drag club where a big show was just cancelled because of zombies, and it’s not until the queens et al. have their back against the wall that they decide to get serious and serve some serious cunt.
Is it scary? Not really. The zombies are mostly there to cause panic and give the characters something to nobly sacrifice themselves to when human errors put them in bad spots. They are what they should be, a representation of the worst parts of society that threaten to drag you down if you’re not careful. It’s pretty funny, but the cheap laughs don’t get in the way of telling a fun, if a little worn down zombie survival story.
Extra point for the Savini cameo, and his line “This isn’t a George Romero movie, zombies aren’t real”
4 out of 5
