and now for something different!
I didn’t realize what this movie was about beyond a teaser trailer I saw, so when it turned out to be The Professional meets Wed Anderson on LSD I was a bit surprised. I know this is “Horror Movie a Day”, but this one was weird enough that I decided to let this one ride.
Yeah, it was weird. It started as what I thought would be a straight up monster movie, but there’s a lot of twists and turns with this story. I don’t want to spoil anything, but several times I thought I had this figured out only to have something happen to completely throw it off. In the end, I was honestly a little on the disappointed side that the theories I had were off base, and in my opinion a little less interesting.
Something that wasn’t disappointing was the acting by the two main leads. The conversations between Aurora and the hitman are major plot drivers (or are they?) and even when they’re predictable, they still kept my attention. Mikkelson is a powerhouse of dramatic performance and Sophie Sloan (who was born halfway into Obama’s second term) holds her own on screen.
I want to like this more but I couldn’t get over the feeling that I’ve seen it all before. The weird sets and costumes, crazy sideways shots and crazy POV angles, the eclectic supporting characters, just seem a little derivative (see above). Overall, it’s solidly middle of the road, but since I don’t want to give half skulls, I’ll nudge it up to a full…
