I don’t remember how this one got on this list, but for some reason I thought this would be a generic early 20s slasher movie. Once the movie started and I saw that it was directed by Dropout TV mainstay and Nosie Boy Josh Ruben, I knew it would be something else. It certainly was.
Parodying two movie genres at once can be tricky, but Heart Eyes manages to illustrate the similarities between RomComs and Slashers and plays them both off of each other very deftly. The tropes are in charge of this one and the way they play off each other is really fun. The movie is both genres at once without selling out either. At it’s core, it’s a comedy but the comedy comes from the merging of the other two.
