Soooo…….I was REALLY excited about this, and since I saw it I have been weighing how I feel about it. I think I’ve finally let it settle enough to understand what this movie is, and it’s not great.
There are a lot of really good things about it. It has a ton of great characters, and the backstory (everything that happened since the first movie) was actually pretty awesome. The main plot….well, there’s not a main plot. There are two or three plot threads weaved together that don’t really matter that much overall and none of them are really resolved that well. It kind of feels like they were making it up as they were going.
Each time they would set up something, I would think “Oh, OK, THIS is the plot”, and then after the third time I was just confused.
Which is what I think a lot of people watching this movie felt also. Confused.
HOWEVER, If you just turn your brain off a little and enjoy the visuals and the actor’s performances, it manages to be an entertaining showcase of scenes, even if they fail to be cohesive to each other. I feel bad giving this 2 skulls out of 5, because I was generally amused by a lot of this, but ultimately I don’t think they were successful at giving Beetlejuice the sequel it deserved.
(Edit: I switched up to 3 since I did actually have fun during the movie. That’s gotta count for something.)
3 out of 5
