Another video game adaptation already! This one is based on a 2015 Playstation 4 game where the goal is to survive the night until you’re rescued in the morning (I guess, that’s all Wikipedia).
The film feels very much like a video game adaptation, with the main characters “respawning” each time they are killed, but quickly realize that they are on a timer and the immortality isn’t forever.
I can’t really say much about this that is going to surprise you. There are some pretty awesome death scenes and monsters and the whole movie is pretty much just a vehicle for them. The young nameless actors are a doing a fine job being scared murder victims, but I couldn’t pick them out of a lineup now if I had to. The somewhat played out Groundhog day concept (which is referenced by a character probably born after it came out) feels pretty applicable here since, you know, video game, and it’s fun to watch the characters use it to try and figure out how to escape.
It’s a good movie to watch if you don’t want to think too hard and just enjoy scared people getting cut in half or literally exploding.
